RCCF GRANT IMPACT STORY: Saving Lives- Enhancing Cardiac Care in Republic County

When moments matter most, preparation can mean the difference between life and death. In Republic County, a life-saving initiative led by Republic County Hospital (RCH) has transformed cardiac care, bringing cutting-edge equipment and vital training to our community.

Thanks to an $18,000 grant from the Republic County Community Foundation Action Fund and the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, RCH was able to purchase a state-of-the-art Hospital ZOLL defibrillator and ten portable ZOLL AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators). These devices, installed throughout the county as of February 2024, ensure seamless compatibility between the hospital, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and the broader community. By standardizing this equipment, the initiative prevents delays in care, saving precious minutes during emergencies.

Beyond equipment, the initiative focused on community preparedness. Community-wide trainings were held to educate 100 residents on hands-only CPR, AED operation, and the PulsePoint AED app. Additionally, county dispatch is now equipped to direct emergency callers to the nearest AED, further strengthening Republic County’s rapid response capabilities.

"Every second counts in cardiac emergencies, and this project has helped ensure that our residents have the tools and knowledge to act when it matters most," said an RCH representative.

The initiative is already making a difference, particularly in rural areas where EMS response times can exceed 20 minutes. RCH and EMS remain committed to ongoing collaboration, focusing on continuous education and maintenance of these life-saving devices.
